Issue #1 | Agency

Historically subjected to land theft, forced migration, and displacement, the question of land and belonging blends with the daily life of the Arab people, as well as other populations who have likewise suffered the impact of colonization.

What complexity does this question carry in relation to gender, migration, land sovereignty, livelihood, and being?

We attempt to tackle the intersection between the individual’s body and that of the land that carries it.

Contributors reflect on the multiplicity of relations to lands, shifting borders, and restrictions of public space.

Al Hayya is a bilingual, biannual platform and publisher founded in Beirut in 2020. It produces literary, visual, and sonic content that confronts the politics of representation, challenges normative frameworks of feminism, and insists on the visibility of anti-racist, transnational thought. Through a growing network of writers, artists, musicians, translators, and editors, with a focus on voices from the Arab region, Al Hayya publishes in print, online, and in audio. Its content engages a wide spectrum of feminist perspectives, exploring their lived, political, and poetic dimensions.
